Type Fair PH is a celebration of Filipino type and talent, organized by Type 63, Manila Middle Ground, Kookie Santos, and Type Mova. The event and gathering is dedicated to bringing together those who share a passion for type, calligraphy, and lettering. In 2024, the event aims to explore how our interactions with these art forms and design disciplines have evolved in the Philippines over the years.
THE OBJECTIVE
This year was a smaller and more intimate gathering compared to the previous year, what the team dubbed as a "lowercase" event. I worked on the branding, main poster, and key visuals for the organizers to later develop and expand into different applications.
PROJECT SCOPE AND ROLE
Creative Direction, Brand Identity, Logo Design, Poster Design
When I was approached to work on this year's event branding, my first thought was to think of how I could represent different layers and applications of type design and appreciation— whether you design your own fonts and make custom type or make posters and layouts or support local type designers or are fascinated by and appreciate type in our everyday lives and everything in between— I hoped to find a way to communicate that the event was welcome to and celebrates everyone who loves type in all its forms.
I wanted the layouts and assets to highlight typefaces by Filipino type and font designers: Hanken Grotesk by @hankendesignco, Maragsa by @jad.otf, Amakan by @jad.otf, Cubao Free @aaronxamar, Quiapo Free by @aaronxamar, HK Compression Heavy by @hankendesignco
the common thread in the guest speakers’ talks was answering the question of “how has our interaction with type evolved through the years?”
The brand identity was expanded and developed further into social media posts, merch, and giveaways by the Type Fair team.
